The Sissinghurst Copper Planter

$0.00

An inspired replica of an original copper basin is displayed in the lovely gardens on the Sissinghurst estate.

When Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson acquired the estate in 1930, it was in ruins. They spent three years clearing the neglected grounds before embarking on a project to transform the barren land into a garden. Their shared dedication led to a project that lasted for more than three decades. Since 1937, Sissinghurst has been open to the public. The garden has ten rooms, with the White Garden being the most famous. The Cottage Garden, on the other hand, has a sunset-inspired planting scheme with vibrant hues of reds and gold that burst into a riot of color during late summer and autumn. At the heart of the garden sits an antique copper basin, surrounded by four majestic Irish yews. The basin is believed to have been sourced locally, possibly from the Tower, and is a relic of a bygone Victorian water heating system, now repurposed by Vita as a central feature. Vita, a renowned author, wrote in 1959 that "his scoop… it is still there – a little hollow in one of the stones near the central copper basin." Harold used it to measure how much rain had fallen in the night. The Sissinghurst Copper Planter is fashioned from a high-quality, thick sheet of brass that is skillfully crafted. Its unique rounded shape and stunning verdigris patina ensure its durability for generations to come.
